Bad Boy or Bad Egg
Posted on September 21, 2009 by Two Becomes One
There is an undeniable appeal to the rough and tumble bad boy type. The air of danger and excitement and the confident demeanor make for an alluring prospect. However there is a fine line between a man with a bit of an edge and a guy who is just a jerk. There are some subtle cues to look for when going after your bad boy.
Respect
There’s no denying that a good anti-authoritarian streak can be a bit sexy. Bucking the status quo can show that a guy is intelligent enough to think for himself and formulate his own opinions. If he isn’t content to just go with the flow, then chances are good he’ll prove to be a more fun and exciting partner. On the other hand, if he doesn’t seem to give a fig for anything or anyone else’s point of view, then there is cause for pause. Being opinionated does not mean being unable to respect or see the validity of anyone else’s opinion. If he doesn’t seem to respect anything else, don’t expect him to respect you either.
Ethics
Let’s face it, we don’t live in a black and white world. There are a lot of gray areas out there, and the boys that seem to float in that murky land between right and wrong are fun and exciting. Nevertheless, there are some fundamentals, and if a fellow doesn’t seem to grasp those, then there could be danger ahead. If the guy you are digging on shows an indifference towards infidelity, violence, theft, or other nefarious activities then he may not be a “bad boy” so much as just a bad person.
Keep in mind that what you might view as exciting when he is doing it to others may not seem quite so cool when he’s doing it to you. If he demonstrates a willingness to pursue his own interests at the expense of others then he probably isn’t ever going to really put you first. However, if he shows some very clear moral compunctions about the big issues, then his willingness to toe the line can be exhilarating and exciting in a good way.
His Friends
You can tell a lot about a guy by the kind of people he associates with. Granted, you can’t judge a man too harshly if he happens to know a few shady characters. If he predominately spends his time with those same questionable people, though, then you might want to take a deeper look. People tend to gravitate to people that reflect their own ideals and characteristics. If a guy has shady and undesirable friends, then you may want to consider that what is attracting you to him is a front and that what lies beneath might not be so attractive. Dating the edgy and exciting guy can be a lot of fun. Chances are you won’t ever be bored and you may even be exposed to some fun and exciting new activities and concepts. If you learn to look beyond the surface and weigh his true character you can land your perfect bad boy while avoiding all of the bad eggs.
