Decoding Dating Slang

I’m sure you have seen the commercial- annoying little girl, talking to her mother in all acronyms. “IDK, My BFF”? But you may have also heard some other terms that have you tilting your head and making the confused face. Be confused no more! We’re here to illuminate some of the more commonly used slangs in today’s singles’ scene.
Catch and Release- popularized by A Girl’s Pocket Guide To Trouser Trout, the term catch and release means just what it sounds like. Letting go of someone you are dating in a nice way.
Friends With Benefits, or FWB- this refers to two people who are not romantically involved, but having a physical relationship. Be warned, FWBs are dangerous territory- if you are seeking something serious, you may be disappointed, or, if you aren’t- you might find that your FWB is and develops feelings.
UMfriend- this is a variation of FWB, save, neither party has really decided it is simply FWB, or building a relationship. It’s a sort of stuck spot, as in, “This is Jane, she is my..um..friend.”
Exing- messing over your current potentials or relationships due to an attachment to an ex. This includes constant whining about the ex, or constantly comparing or complaining.
Cougar- we don’t really like this term, but a Cougar is an older woman, usually 40+ who trolls clubs looking for much younger men. The connotation is not positive, though some are taking the term back and using it in a positive way. See also MILF.
MILF: this is an acronym “Mom I’d Like To” ah, engage in sexual relations with. You know the word. This was made popular by a movie and has since taken off as a label that is used quite alot.
LDR: Long distance relationship. This one’s a little self explanatory.
Wingman/Wingwoman: This is the friend you take along with you to either chat up the interests friends, or to get you out of an awkward or unwanted situation.
ASL: if someone asks for this online, they want your age, sex, and location.
NSA: If someone says this is what they seek, they want a casual relationship, hence, “no strings attached”.
Bunny Boiler: If you get called this, it is not flattering. A bunny boiler is an obsessive person, think back to Fatal Attraction. If someone is referred to as a bunny boiler, steer clear.
Sexting: sexting usually refers to steamy messages via text, but can occasionally mean sending naughty or risqué photos back and forth.
Manicorn/Unicorn: Though Unicorn tends to mean a bisexual female that open relationships and swingers can seek out, both terms can mean simply the ideal person- who, in fact, does not exist.
A Long Dirty Road-This generally means that you have broken up, but you are continuing to sleep with someone. ALDR usually does not lead to getting back together, and when referred to in this context may be being kept from friends and others or done in secret.
