Internet Dating: Not for Nerds Anymore

The way that it was: if you met your sweetie online, and it worked, you had to abashedly explain that you met via the internet and be met with laughs and good natured jokes. Nevermind if you were just meeting someone from the internet for the first time, then you were met with all sorts of ominous stories about everything from psycho killers to photo shop pros who could make you think you were meeting up with a supermodel when in fact, you were meeting up with someone who loosely resembled a troll doll. Not anymore. A new study sheds some surprising light on the phenomenon of e dating.

The Numbers Speak For Themselves

The new study showed that when couples spent a significant time emailing and chatting with one another, more often than not, the first date led to a second and then some. 94% of all new potential partners who met online did in fact go on to subsequent dates.
The study, by Dr Jeff Gavin, of the University of Bath also revealed that it was actually the men who became more emotionally intimate and dependent than the women, already more committed to the relationship prior to engaging in long term dating activity. With the number of people utilizing online dating sites surging every day, it is not surprising that meeting someone online no longer has the nerd factor it once did.

The online survey polled 229 people from ages 18 to 65 who were using UK internet based dating sites to find matches and showed that not only did 94 percent see their partners again, but on average the relationships lasted at least 7 months and 18 percent lasted over a year.

Not only that, it also revealed, not surprisingly- that the more they engaged in chat, the closer and more understanding they were of one another prior to the relationship, which is something that relationship gurus have touted as one of the best ways to lasting love.

So What Happened to the Couples?

Of the relationships polled in the study, 24 percent had been going on for a year at least, 8 percent had been going on for two years, and 39 percent were going on at the time of the study itself. Of the ones that had already ended at the time of the study, 4 percent had lasted over two years and fourteen percent had been going on for over a year.

It is clear that with more and more people logging on and hooking up these numbers will likely climb even more, and the statistics for US based users actually shows even more promise and steady growth. This trend has certainly seen a remarkable increase, and also surprising to some is that it is phone and instant message communication that leads the increase. It’s obvious to anyone that internet dating is not a more common and effective way of meeting someone no matter what you are looking for.
