Taking a Great Profile Photo

Posted on September 21, 2009 by Two Becomes One

So you’ve decided you’re going to try one of the many online dating sites and you wonder just what sorts of photos you want to put up there. Sure, having candid shots of you having a great time out with friends or hiking are good to have in there, but what about a real, clear and honest shot that flatters you in the best possible way. We will go into just a few tips for taking a photo that is sure to catch anyone’s eye on a dating site.

Using a Webcam:

When you are using a webcam to take your profile shots, be sure that the light is not right behind your head. You’re not trying to come across like you’ve just reached critical mass, they want to see what you look like. Always make sure that the lighting is even and not to any one side of your face with a webcam photo. Also, be sure to have lighting- nothing says creepy like a dark photo where you really can’t make much out.

Using a digital camera:

Using a digital camera is definitely the way to go. If you don’t have one, get one- they are worth every penny. The more light you have when using a digital camera to take your profile photo, the better- outdoor lighting is often best, but, be careful to avoid the glare from the sun.
To take a perfect outdoor profile pic, look for areas where it is lit, but slightly shady and don’t take the picture in the direct light, which can hollow our your eyes and shadow your face.

One or Two Just Won’t Do:

Take lots and lots of photos. Have fun with it, play around and be a little goofy. The more photos that you take when you’re working on getting a good profile shot, the better your chances are at getting just the image you want. Don’t worry too much as you take the pictures, just smile, giggle and relax. The less tense you are, the better your photos will be.

Keep It Clean:

If you’re looking for someone to date who is every bit as into partying hard, that’s fine- but your first impression should not be of you and your perfect keg stand. Nor should it be something racey or over the top. Sure, you might be looking just to have a good time, but you’re more inclined to receive responses with a casual but fun photo of yourself where you can be seen clearly. Save the more personal photos for other parts of your profile or for sending a little later on.

On the whole, taking a picture for any profile you have online is a fun experience that is going to be the first impression you make on someone, so make it a good one. Smile, show yourself and really dazzle them with just who you are.
