Singles Guide To Texting
Posted on September 21, 2009 by Two Becomes One
Everywhere you look these days, someone’s got their head down on their mobile device, firing away a text message- this method of communication is quick, it’s instant and it’s hot right now and doesn’t show any sign of slowing down. This is a fun and easy way to get in touch or just say hi without high pressure- so why are so many people finding that there IS pressure on it? You may have heard horror stories- dumped via text, and the like. Here are a few simple tips to texting like a pro.
Be Quick, But Readable
There is nothing worse than having to stand there at the bus stop, miss your bus, get splashed by a passing car because you’re trying to figure out just what in the world your texter is trying to say. While not everyone has this extreme of an experience (Not your author, I swear!) Mashing words together without spaces, leaving out letters to save time, or abbreviating too much not only make your texts hard to decipher- it makes you come across as a little on the vapid side. No, you don’t have to spell check your texts, but make sure that they are at least clear words.
Just…Don’t.
If you are considering the following, please, call your cell phone provider immediately and have your texting plan dropped- the following things should never, ever be done via text:
Don’t say I love you for the first time in a text. Sure, it’s a common cutesy couple thing to do. But not the first time.
Changing the dynamic of the relationship- and by this we just mean dumping. Have a little class here. Next thing you know we’ll be having to tell people it’s not okay to dump via facebook status change.
Conversely, understand the beauty of texting lies in its casual, abbreviated communication. Sending novels should be left to email or hand written letters. Do people still write on paper, sometimes?
Don’t machine gun text. If he or she is not responding, continuing to send text after text is just going to make you look unstable and pushy. Just wait for a reply, and go from there.
Don’t drunk text. This one’s always on here, but nobody ever listens- or they listen, and a few rums down it’s “I’m gonna give her/him a piece-a my mind!” On second thought, go ahead, drunk text. We love that site.
Now if you find yourself wanting to have an actual, vocal on the phone chat, there is nothing at all wrong with hitting the dial button rather than the “send text message” button. If you feel frustrated because you’ve been textually active for a number of weeks and you’re still not getting the in person or on phone chats you crave, take a little initiative. Remember, texting is fun, it’s casual, but it’s short. Enjoy your longer conversations via phone, email or even, dare we say it? In person.
