What Do I Wear?

Making a first impression is key to seeing you have a second date. When you find yourself standing in front of the closet wondering just what to wear on that all important first date, it can be just a bit daunting. Depending on the impression you want to make, choosing the look you want is all a matter of a few key things.
Firstly, know where you’re going, before you decide. If you know that you are going to a concert, make sure you know what kind of concert you’ll be attending. Showing up for your date in a crushed velvet number with heels may be appropriate for the opera, but when he comes to pick you up in his metal band shirt and combat boots, it may be just a bit embarrassing. Conversely, if you show up in a tight black tank top and a miniskirt and you’ll be attending the latest showing of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, you may not make the impression you’d hoped. Finding out where you are going can save you a great deal of trouble, and, well, keep that crushed velvet number from getting ruined in a mosh pit.
Be aware of the seasons. While, yes, the romantic idea of him giving you his coat is done to death in movies, it usually comes across more awkward in reality. Now, if the temperature drops a little later on and you’re unprepared, that’s different, but hopping out in a blizzard in a midriff top usually screams lack of common sense.
If you don’t know where you are going, work casual is usually a pretty safe bet. Don’t overdo it on the sexy, but make sure that you still come across as feminine and having made an effort. There is really no need to go all out, completely on a first date and you want to choose something that you feel comfortable in. Feeling comfortable will mean acting comfortable- and being able to be yourself without being self conscious about what you are wearing definitely helps to set the right mood and make the best impression. When choosing make up for a first date, always remember less is more. Most men want to see you as you are- they know you can make yourself up. Don’t bathe in the perfume, and make sure that you approach how you dress the same way you approach the date- with cool confidence.
Whatever you decide to wear on your first date, being yourself and having a good time is always the best choice. You will find more often than not, if you are enjoying his company and really just letting yourself relax and have a great time- the smile is the single most important fashion accessory you will ever have. Whether you’re attending an opera, or head banging the night away, a good time and an openness to getting to know him is the greatest way of putting your best foot forward on a first date.
